Switching health insurance?

JamesW asked:

If you switch health insurance companies at work (say from a CIGNA group plan to another plan – lets say Blue Shield), what will happen the the out of pocket medical expenses you have incurred over that year? Are you just out of luck because you are now covered by a different group?

You start all over again. The new insurer is not going to pick up where you left off on out of pocket expenses. by changing companies, you change everything having to do with that policy.

Yes, that is right; the deductibles, etc., are separately computed by each insurance company.

It is only the 13th day of the year. Your expenses so far this year should not be very much.

depends on your employer and the contract they sign. most companies will get the information of your expenses and continue with no changes, unless there is a change in the plan itself.

just because it is a new company does not mean you have to start over. that is bull. i suggest you contact your benefit rep or human resources department for the correct info.

Usually just out of luck. Sometimes the new company will give a deductible credit but of course that costs more.
